1PASSWORD ALTERNATIVE

1Password alternative for startups & small teams (cheaper, simpler)

1Password is built for hundreds. If your team is twelve people and you don't need SSO, LitePassword is the lighter version of the same idea.

Where 1Password wins

1Password is the gold standard. The autofill is best-in-class, Watchtower is genuinely useful, and the Secret Key model is what made zero-knowledge mainstream. If you’re a security-conscious team of 30+ that needs Okta SSO and per-user audit, stay on 1Password — you’ll get your money’s worth.

Where 1Password gets heavy for a small team

The problem with 1Password at the small end is that the feature surface keeps expanding. Groups, custom roles, Travel Mode, Watchtower, Secrets Automation, CLI, SSH agent, Developer Tools, SCIM — none of these are wrong, but none of them are what a 5-person team needs in week one. You end up paying for the bigger product whether you use it or not.

And the pricing reflects that. $19.95/mo for Teams Starter (up to 10 users) is fine, but $7.99/user/mo for Business with a 10-seat minimum becomes $80/mo before you’ve even logged in. For a 5-person startup that’s $80/mo to share four Stripe restricted keys.

What LitePassword does instead

Same crypto. Less surface.

  • Same AES-256 + PBKDF2 derivation on-device.
  • Same “vendor cannot read your data” guarantee.
  • A recovery key that mirrors the Secret Key concept — generated on your device, shown once, never sent to us.

What’s removed:

  • Groups and custom permissions. You get three roles plus per-vault access.
  • SSO and SCIM. You sign in with email + password or email magic-code.
  • Watchtower, Travel Mode, Secrets Automation. These are roadmap candidates, not v1 priorities.

What’s added:

  • A real free tier. 1 user, 5 secrets, forever. (1Password is 14-day trial only.)
  • A 5-user Family plan at $5/mo flat. (1Password Teams Starter starts at $19.95/mo flat for 10 users.)
  • Hard limits visible in the app. You’ll see “47/50 secrets” before you bump into the cap.

1PASSWORD FAQ

Common questions when switching from 1Password

Is there a cheaper alternative to 1Password Business?

Yes — LitePassword Business is $10/mo flat for up to 12 users (so $1/user/mo at the cap). For a 5-person startup, LitePassword Family is $5/mo flat (so $1/user/mo at the cap). 1Password Teams Starter is $19.95/mo flat (up to 10 users); 1Password Business is $7.99/user/mo with a minimum seat count — much more expensive once you have 4+ users.

Is there a simpler alternative to 1Password for small teams?

Yes. 1Password ships an enterprise feature set (groups, custom permissions, SSO, SCIM, Watchtower) by default. LitePassword strips that down to what a 2–12 person team actually uses: three roles, per-vault access, five secret types, a generator, and a recovery key.

Does LitePassword have a Secret Key like 1Password?

Functionally yes, called the recovery key. It is generated on your device at master-password setup, shown to you once, and never sent to our servers. It is the only way to reset your master password later.

Can I import my 1Password vault?

Yes — see the [1Password migration guide](/migrate/1password). You export from 1Password as 1pux, then paste each secret into the matching LitePassword type. Average migration for a 10-person team: ~20 minutes.

Why doesn't LitePassword offer SSO?

Because the target user is a 2–12 person team where SSO is not yet worth the operational cost. Adding SSO would also mean adding org admin reset, which weakens the zero-knowledge model. If you need SSO, you're past the size LitePassword is built for.

How does LitePassword compare on browser autofill?

1Password has the most mature autofill experience in the category. LitePassword uses a web-based vault with one-click copy on every field; the browser extension is on the roadmap. If you live in autofill, 1Password is still ahead today.
